Dances with Wolves is one of the most popular native American movies which has managed to get the recognition and awareness of such movies but which has also played an important role in portraying the history of the native American Indian peoples. Dances with Wolves was also the movie that propelled most of the Native American Actors and Native American actresses in the film industry. Dances with Wolves is an epic western movie from 1990 and which was directed by Kevin Costner, who had also starred in the film. The movie was actually an adaptation of the carrying the same name and and written by Michael Blake in 1988. The story follows a Union Army Lieutenant travelling to the border seeking a military post. In his journey he meets however a tribe of Lakota Indians and his dealings with them suddenly become part of the story and thus the movie plot. It is said that it took Costner 5 years to develop the movie with a limited budget of only $22 million. The movie was shot in different parts of the United States, but mostly in Wyoming and South Dakota. The Library of Congress had selected it for preservation in the National Film Registry of the United States given its value and significant in historical, cultural and aesthetical terms.

Dances with Wolves was nominated for various prizes and awards and has won many at the same time. Among the prizes that the movie received are the Academy Awards for Best Picture, for Best Director, for Best Writing, for Best Cinematography, for Best Film Editing, for Best Sound, and the Silver Bear for an outstanding single achievement. Moreover, the film received two American Film Institute recognitions, one in 1998 (AFI’s 100 Years... 100 Movies no. 75) and one in 2006 (AFI's 100 Years... 100 Cheers no. 59).
